WALFORD COLLEGE

Shropshire

June 1999

The mobile horse weigh platform was purchased in October 1999 with money raised by the HND Equine Studies year 2 students. The students ran a summer show as a project and were able to choose how they wanted to spend the money.

The weighbridge has proved to be an invaluable tool at the college for the following reasons;

1. Each horse is weighed weekly allowing the Yard manager to monitor any fluctuations and respond accordingly.

2. Anthelmintic treatments can be calculated with a high degree of accuracy, thus, reducing wastage and overdosing!

3. Owners/riders can monitor their horse's weights and compare any significant fluctuations with work loads/illness/management etc.

4. Lecturing staff use the results for calculating feed rations during lectures and making comparisons between the use of weigh tapes, formulae and weigh tables.

The mobile horse weigh platform has the added advantage of being very easily moved around, stored and use for both humans and horses! (we have never had a problem with any of our horses going on or off).
